Chattooga - Section 4 - Feb. 8 : Section 4: 76 Bridge to Camp Creek

Today I paddled with Janet, Tim M., and John Holley. From the bridge to Seven Foot Roger also paddled with us. The weather was spectacular; with a high temperature near 65. The water temperature was still winter-like. By mid-afternoon it warmed into the low 50's; in the morning it was in the 40's. The level was just a tad below 1.1 on the bridge gage. The crew, save for John and myself, put in above the Bull to run the single drop.

We maintained a fast pace throughout day, except at the lake. We paddled in an 1:15 from the beach below the Bull to the mouth of Stekoa Creek. In another 30 minutes we were at the rocky beach at the bend above Camp Creek. You could see the wildwater influence on the trip :-)

Chattooga - Section 3.5 - Feb. 28th : We had high hopes for paddling Warwoman Creek today, but the significant rain went to our south and to our north. Chris, Scott, John Holly, Amanda, Janet and I all met at the bridge; the level was just above 1.4 on the bridge gage, with no real chance of hitting 2 ft. by Noon. We all decided for a 3.5 run!

Saturday was overcast with light rain for most of the day. The water was still cool, not above 50, but the air temperatures did break 50 in the afternoon. We set out from Thrifts Ferry just after 11AM.

Metro Chattahoochee - March 8th : Tim Boring, Jennifer Green, and I spent a marathon day on the Metro Hooche - hard to believe, but nearly four hours! We put in at Powers Ferry and run down to Paces Ferry. We were all in our long boats, Green, Pirouette, and the Speeder. Our mode for the day was to paddle down and then attain back up! Unless we found a surf wave or a rock to play with!

Lower Santeetlah - March 15th : Lower Santeetlah Creek - SR 1127 to Santeetlah Lake

Today I paddled with Tim Boring, Kevin Sisson, Wayner, Amanda, Tonya, and Brett. We had drizzle in the early afternoon, but the rain did stop. Later in the afternoon, the temperature warmed to 60 and there was some clear sky. It was a beautiful day; thankfully, we had enough rain to bring up the Santeetlah.

As noted by Bob and David Benner in Carolina Whitewater most of the action is in the mile and one-half section below the SR 1127 Bridge. We put on in the group camping area just above the bridge.

The day was clear with temperatures near 60; it did get colder through the afternoon. We put on at Ferebee and caught every eddy and played every wave down to Surfer's. The sun was behind the gorge and the cold front was moving in; so we booked from there down to the Falls.

Warwoman Creek : Paddled today with Tim Boring, Jennifer, John Holly, and Casey Jones. The temperatures warmed to the low 50's just after Noon, but cooled through the afternoon to 43! The level was just above 3' (for the Chattooga); it was at 4" on the bridge gauge on Earl's Ford Road for Warwoman; it was at 2" when we returned.

The Creek is beautiful; we ran the section from the bride to the ford. There are three significant drops (Class 3) in the first half: Mattress (3+), the Hump, and Pin Ball. There was quite a bit of wood on the trip; at least six river wide strainers. Most we could boof over; two we needed a limbo move. Casey and Tim did a great job in scouting ahead for any and all lines, there were a couple, blocked with wood.

Ocoee Playtime : Saturday was a beautiful day on the Ocoee; there was no rain and no thunderstorms. Stacy Stone and I were there for a NOC class Wayner. We put in at the ramp and Stacy styled the left line. Chuck opted for the right line; first time I have run Entrance in a year; thanks Wayner! We stopped at the first wave at Staging Eddy to check out the surf. The wave was not clean; so we pressed on down the wave before the drop. There Stacy styled her ferry; Chuck had a chance to work on a combat roll :-) We paddled down the wave below Whirly Bird; it too wouldn't hold you for very long. We then paddled down to Broken Nose.

We sat for the longest time in Eddy 1 as a flotilla of rafts came downstream. Stacy had a beautiful peel out and ran the main line clean. Chuck went for ferry to Eddy 2 but then leaked out into the drop for the sneak. We all met below the island; Wayner said that Eddy's 3 and 5 were pretty much washed out.

The weather was dreary at the put-in with light rain. By the time we reached Goforth we had blue sky and sunshine! The level at Noon was 1,404 and the river continued to rise through the day; by the time we took off at 5PM it was 1,953. This was Shannon's first descent of the Ocoee in an open boat. She even had the chance to help out with a rescue :-)
