AWC Section 4 trip heading downstream
We paddled down to Surfer's where all three of us had clean runs. Kevin had a fantastic old school ender in his Jackson!
We paddled down to the eddy above Screaming Left Turn. James missed the eddy and headed down the rapid. He styled the first drop, but turned sideways in the second. He didn't flip, but he did broach on the river center rock. Kevin was below and I eddied out above. James was able to rock the boat and free himself. He did this staying upright!
We regrouped and then headed to river right for the first drop of Squeeze Play. We all took the river right line and then setup for the second drop. James went for the fish count, giving Kevin and I a chance to work on our Class 3 rescue skills. James got to river right; Kevin got the boat and Chuck the paddle. Below we took a break and headed downstream.
We eddied out at Rockjumble and talked about the different lines. James opted for the river right chute. As we were getting ready to run the rapid, we had a chance to watch Kevin style the Watauga line. James followed me down the chute; glad he didn't follow me too closely. I meant to stay to the left of the rocks below. Instead I slice between them on my edge. James had a super clean run and line!
At Woodall we headed far right for the sneak. As I came over the ledge there was a tree in the right eddy. I made it down fine, but the landing was brushy. I held onto a branch, to clear out some run for James. He flipped on his landing, but I was able to turn my boat into his for a T-rescue. Way to go James!
A good day on the Chattooga!
